Cambodia Beaches – VongVeng
The mention of a tropical beach holiday conjures images of pristine white stretches of sand, gently-swinging hammocks and colorful, refreshing cocktails. But does that perfect paradise really exist? To find out, simply visit Cambodia beaches.
Cambodia beaches are all this and more. Sihanoukville is the main destination for sun and sand seekers, with miles of palm-lined white sandy beaches, blue waters and beautiful islands.
In the 1960s, Sihanoukville suddenly became a hotspot for beach tourism, and certain areas quickly bloomed into luxurious resorts and high class hotels. Over time, as eco-friendly tourism and international travel becomes more and more appealing, the beaches are getting cleaner and more accessible than ever.
From the city of Sihanoukville, beaches stretch out along the coastline, separated by rocky headlands, covering almost twenty kilometers. Along with a booming party scene, Sihanoukville consists of six main beaches, each with their own unique atmosphere and attractions.
Located at the base of the well-known Victory Hill near the center of rapidly developing downtown-Sihanoukville, Victory Beach is a wonderful place to enjoy up-scale seafood restaurants. Sihanoukville beaches are well-known for their delicious jumbo shrimp and grilled sea-fish.
With its slanting palms and gentle waves, Victory Beach is a great spot for a quiet day due to the lack of beach vendors and hawkers.
Most hotels and guesthouses are situated on Victory Hill, which comes to life at night and is one of Sihanoukville’s most popular party hot spots. There are plenty of options when it comes to bars and clubs, but some of the most upbeat and lively of these include: Mojo Music Bar, a colorful place with live DJs and a pool table and Retox, which features a private karaoke room and offers “free drinks if you can play a good set”.
One of the more relaxed and peaceful Cambodia beaches, Independence Beach hosts a lovely little array of bars and restaurants and very family friendly. The beach inherited its name from the legendary Independence Hotel, which hosted Jacqueline Kennedy during her 1967 visit to Cambodia.
The original hotel interior was designed by King Norodom Sihanouk and nowadays offers top-rate facilities including the lavish Jouvence Spa, fitness center, and beautiful pool area. Accommodation ranges from simple yet elegant Deluxe Rooms, to luxurious Pool Villas, all of which command stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand.
The most well-known of the Cambodia beaches and perhaps the most loved among wealthier Cambodians is the Sokha Beach Resort. The resort covers 21.3 hectares, with a kilometer of pristine white-sand beach, and offers a variety of gorgeous accommodation options, from executive suites to individual, on-the-water bungalows. Guests can choose from eight different bars and restaurants and enjoy easy access to water sports and island trips. For those looking for a luxurious Cambodia beach experience, Sokha Beach Resort is very much the place to be.
Ochheuteal beach is by far the most popular of all Cambodia beaches. The long, open stretch of Ochheuteal is lined with wooden beach shacks offering food and drink, sun loungers and bars. Excellent and affordable BBQ seafood is up for grabs along with delectable grilled squid sold by hawkers roaming the sands daily.
Ochheuteal is a great place for holidaymakers to enjoy the wide beach, shallow waters and shady trees. The pier at the west end of the beach at the bottom of Beach Road is your portal to the beautiful islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem. Book your trips and ferries early to avoid disappointment as they are popular and ferry numbers are limited.
As well as the relaxing atmosphere during the day, at night the Serendipity beach section of Ochheuteal comes to life and its bars are the most popular venue for epic beach parties lasting long into the night. Cheap drinks and no noise restrictions make Serendipity the ultimate party destination for people of all ages looking for a good time.
Otres I & II
Due to its fairly recent development, Otres Beach is relatively unknown among tourists. However, don’t let its lack of press deter you. The quietness of palm tree lined Otres beach, with its tropical-island feel, eco-friendly guesthouses and hippy appeal, is one of the most calming and peaceful places in all of Cambodia.
At the north end (Otres I) accommodation is mostly mid-range in price. The sea shore is lined with bamboo beach bars offering grass-hut style rooms that feel truly exotic. At the Otres Orchid, one can imagine sipping happily on a bottle of rum, swinging in the hammock that hangs outside each hut, and enjoying the sea-breeze.
Further down, in Otres II, accommodation ranges from mid- to high-end. While many establishments offer a similar stay to Otres I, this beach holds a wider variety of classy beach-front hotels and restaurants.
Three notable places at Otres Beach:
- The Elephant Garden
This stunning boutique-style hotel is situated on a wider stretch of sand than most places. Studded with Angkorian statues and blue-cushioned loungers, Elephant Garden is the ideal spot to spend your day. The restaurant and bar offers an eclectic mix of food and drink to suit just about anyone’s taste.
- Mushroom Point in Otres I
Quite literally a giant mushroom-shaped hostel and bar with dormitory-style rooms and individual bungalows on stilts. Mushroom point is located right next to Papa Pippo Restaurant which offers some of the best pizza and gelato in Cambodia.
- Wildside Villas
Just up the road, inland from Otres II, is Wildside Villas. This unique hotel is the embodiment of the bright and exotic Cambodian jungle. Nestled in the trees are several individual two-story villas, each with a walk-around balcony and downstairs seating area. Though a little walk from the beach, the hotel boasts a peaceful swimming pool area and two bars complete with an extensive cocktail menu. Western Asian fusion is on the dinner menu and the restaurant is known for its delicious breakfasts.
In addition to some great places to stay and to eat, Otres beach also has the widest variety of activities available of all the Cambodia beaches. The majestic Queenco Palm Beach Resort marks the start of Otres beach and offers kayak, catamaran, paddle-board and windsurf hire. Further down the beach is the Blue Lagoon Kite Surfing School which offers courses for all levels.
Cambodia Beaches are a Paradise haven
The absolute beauty and serenity of Otres, Sokha and Independence beaches, mixed with the wild nightlife and exotic entertainment of Serendipity and downtown Sihanoukville make Cambodia beaches the most interesting and diverse in the world. They are well worth a visit.
