What are the Differences between Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem When You Take the KohRong Ferry?

South East Asia is no stranger to natural beauty and it is the massively untouched environment that entices so many people to the country every single year. Tourism levels are growing, but the appeal of the Kingdom of Wonders is not diminishing whatsoever. Two popular spots for tourists of all interests are Koh Rong and Koh RongSamloem – the country’s most famous neighbor islands. Both are located just off the coast of Sihanoukville and the closeness encourages many of “Snooky’s” visitors to flock to the archipelagos via the Koh Rong ferry after spending time on the mainland.

One of the main deliberations people have during their travels is which island to visit. Well, why not both? Similar in many ways but also fairly contrasting, these jewels of Cambodia can be visited if you buy a ticket for the Koh Rong Ferry. The Cambodia Speed Ferry is a trusted mode of transport that departs from the pier on a daily basis. With the safety-equipped catamarans sailing over Cambodian waters multiple times per day, it has never been easier to explore the country’s beautiful enclaves.

Furthermore, booking the Koh Rong ferry online enables travelers to reserve their seat when on the move, so there really is no reason not to look at the world through rose-tinted sunglasses – literally. Don’t decide which one to visit just yet, because an informed decision can be made when you familiarize yourself with the distinctness between the two.

  • The Crowds the Peninsulas Attract

The crowds that make their way to the islands throughout the year differ a lot, what with Koh Rong being more developed and therefore more enticing to the backpacker crowd. This isn’t to say that you won’t see couples, business professionals and wildlife lovers boarding the Koh Rong ferry, though, because the environment is very bio-diverse and despite what most people think, there are sections of land that have not yet been developed for mass tourism.

During the high season, the famous Full Moon Party takes place on the bigger island’s beaches. Expect plenty of socializing, drinking and dancing at these parties, which tend to continue until the sun rises. The nightlife on Koh Rong attracts people who enjoy letting their hair down and most pubs, bars and restaurants face the shore.

Samloem is a magnet for couples in search of a romantic getaway and is especially popular among travelers hoping to unwind and bask in utter tranquility. Some of the tourists that trickle onto the islet from its bigger sister will be craving time-out after taking advantage of cheap drink deals and adrenaline-pumping activities on the bigger archipelago.

  • Activities on Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem

You won’t be left looking at your watch when visiting either island via the Koh Rong ferry. Opportunities to indulge in outdoor activities are varied and the following things can be added to the travel itinerary:

  • Diving and Snorkeling – If you are interested in getting your PADI certification, this island is the ideal place to do so. Diving schools invite people of all ages to submerge themselves beneath the waves and come face-to-face with tropical marine life. There’s also the option to put on a snorkel mask and flippers for a shallow water experience.
  • Kayaking – Kayak rentals are available on a daily or hourly basis. If you choose to rent a kayak when on Koh Rong, consider paddling over to KohToch Beach.
  • Volunteering – The desire to get involved in volunteer opportunities with fellow islanders will be tempting. Many volunteer projects focus on conservation and education for Khmer kids.

Visit the bigger island on the Koh Rong ferry if you are interested in getting close to nature, because the road-less paradise is home to a zip-line adventure park. Mountain biking is a preferred hobby on both islands, too.

  • Environment, Distance and Accommodation Options

As the Koh Rong ferry approaches sandy shoreline and rugged mountainous terrain, the views might fool you into thinking that these paradise escapes are just the same, only different sizes. However, there are a lot more dissimilarities than people think. Although both islands are massively unspoiled, you will notice that smaller sister Samloem is more untouched. Additionally, both landscapes blend high hills with a pristine coastline, where traditional fishing villages, luxury bungalows, and guesthouses can be found. Backpacker options are more diverse on Koh Rong, though.

At 24.5 kilometers squared, Samloem is a lot smaller than Koh Rong, which boasts 43 kilometers of powder-white sandy beaches. Samloem’s highest point is 202 meters and the population of 300 is significantly smaller than the number of people living on its northern sister, which is estimated at 1,100 and growing. The journey from Sihanoukville’s mainland to Koh Rong will take around 30 minutes, whereas the KohRong ferry to the other densely forested peninsula will take approximately 45 minutes.
