Why Otres Beach Sihanoukville is the Most Relaxing Place on the Cambodian Mainland
For many first-time visitors to Cambodia, Otres Beach Sihanoukville goes undiscovered, but it really shouldn’t. This special stretch of beach lends its beauty only to those who venture outside of the hustle and bustle. A 20-minute drive is all it takes to arrive at this relaxing area from KrongPreah Sihanouk and if you were to look at the map of Otres from a birds-eye view, you would realise just how expansive this stretch of beach is. Different to other areas of Sihanoukville, it is in complete contrast to the well-known party haven that is Serendipity.
A feeling of peacefulness will wash over you as soon as you arrive on Otres Beach Sihanoukville, where guesthouse, restaurant and bar owners all share one thing in common – they strive to keep the atmosphere as laid-back as possible after 10:00 pm, with the majority of beach-lined social spots turning off the music at this time. Whilst it is still possible to let your hair down here, don’t expect to be swarmed by haggling vendors, tuktuk drivers and backpackers guzzling their buckets of booze like you might when lingering around good old ‘Snooky’.
- Location from Serendipity Beach
When you are in the centre of the madness in Sihanoukville, surrounded by bars blasting their music and party-goers stumbling down the streets, you may think that you will have to explore much further than the Sihanoukville province – named after Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihanouk (1941-1955 and 1993-2004). However, Otres Beach Sihanoukville is very different to what can be found on Serendipity Beach, which has evolved immensely over the last few years. Although golden sand extends along the shoreline in both locations, the atmosphere and offerings are very different.
Situated 5 kilometres south of Serendipity Beach, Otres offers beautiful ruby red sunsets, delicious cuisine cooked up by talented chefs, fruity cocktails on the beach and a nightlife scene, but Otres has been splashed with class more than Snooky’s sometimes ‘sleazy’ spots. Lively Serendipity has its hideouts, but it can be a challenge to evade the backpacker-focused scene, making Otres Beach Sihanoukville a nice change. Don’t expect to feel as wary when walking around Otres at night or when leaving belongings on the beach during the day whilst you take a dip in the refreshing waters, because thieves are much less likely to be creeping around this retreat in Cambodia.
- Three Sections of Otres Beach Sihanoukville
Otres Beach Sihanoukville is separated into three sections – Otres 1, Otres 2 and Otres 3. This is actually pretty convenient for anyone who visits, because it means that they can inform the taxi driver of the specific position at which they want to be dropped off, minus the confusion and effort of hauling backpacks and suitcases around. Whichever section you get out of the taxi at, you can rest assured that the water is clean and the vibe, overall, fairly upscale. A place to unwind, Otres Village is snuggled just behind the stretch of beach, where waves lap up gently onto the shore and trees peacefully hang over the ocean-facing joints.
It would be a lie to say that Otres Beach Sihanoukville is flawless like it was once upon a time, but it sure does give other parts of Asia a run for their money. Finding an empty spot of sand won’t be all that difficult when strolling along all three sections, with Occheuteal Beach’ssouthern end offering more patches of sand than any other part of Otres.Otres 1 is usually the first section visitors will see and so it is understandable that this is the busiest part, in terms of tourism-oriented attractions and visitors. Don’t be fooled though – you can still get a massage when relaxing on a lounger and listen to serene music on this part of the shore.
The centre is perhaps the most saturated part development-wise, with some businesses and resorts positioned here. Don’t let that word ‘saturated’ scare you off though, because this paradisal place still holds onto its blissfulness in many ways. Long Beach extends 1,500 metres and separates sections 1-2. Fairly vacant on most days, this is the beach to go to for some tranquility. Otres 3 is undeveloped and is preferred for sunrise and sunsetviews.
- Lack of Construction Work
Developers have of course had their eye on Otres Beach Sihanoukville for quite some time now. After all, who wouldn’t? The fairly untouched coastline and relaxed ambiance makes for the perfect attraction but then again, it is this calmness that makes Otres so unique. The comparisons between this laid-back escape and some other tourist hotspots around Cambodia’s coast are widespread. Luckily, this destination has managed to push away big construction projects and for now, all that can be found here are guesthouses and a sprinkling of beach shack-type businesses in the central section.Posted on
